Wallasey's steel band
Our
steel band was the formed at the end of February 1989. The drums
or "pans" were made by a member of the Caribbean Centre
in Liverpool. He came for about four weeks to instruct the band
members, but after that the Boys themselves conducted practices,
chose and arranged their own music, and in time taught other Boys
to play. The name CariBBean Sound was chosen so that we could utilise
the BB crest within the title.

At
its formation, and for several more years, the Caribbean Sound was
the only youth steel band on Merseyside and in the BB. It was immediately
in demand to play at fairs and for school activities and projects,
and has continued to play regularly ever since. The band continued
to go from strength to strength, so much so that two years after
it started several days were spent at a local professional recording
studio making an EP cassette entitled Yellow Bird.
Having
been played a great deal and travelled afar, including to Denmark
on three occasions, the pans were coming to the end of their useful
life span and in September 1998 we committed ourselves "in
faith" to raising £6000 to purchase an enhanced set of
12 pans. We received a grant for half of the cost from the New Wallasey
Regeneration Fund. The new pans were made for us in Coventry and
arrived at the end of April 1999. It was then that we decided to
change our logo to the current one. A grant was obtained last year
to purchase a trailer and now transporting the pans around the North
West is a lot easier.
